Welcome to the Santa Claus Research Committee a cherished organization dedicated to the magic of Christmas and the true spirit of Santa Claus.

Our Origins

Founded in the early 1940s by the Santa Claus Chamber of Commerce the Santa Claus Research Comm
ittee
™ was born out of a desire to support and guide those who take on the important role of Mr. Santa Claus during the festive season. The original committee was spearheaded by Louis J. Koch, the visionary Chairman and creator of Santa Claus Land, and Jim Yellig, a beloved President and legendary Santa Claus. Together, they laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong commitment to celebrating and preserving the traditions of Santa Claus.

Our Legacy

The committee's first major endeavor resulted in the creation of the booklet, “It’s Fun To Be A Real Santa Claus.” This guide, distributed for decades in Santa Claus, Indiana, served as a vital resource for those aspiring to portray Santa Claus in the most authentic and heartwarming manner. The booklet encompassed essential tips and guidelines, offering practical advice on how to embody the beloved character.

A New Chapter

In 2014, we revitalized our mission by reforming the Santa Claus Research Committee
™ in Santa Claus, Indiana. With a renewed focus, a dedicated group of enthusiasts embarked on a journey to build upon the original committee’s legacy. After a decade of extensive research and reflection, we are thrilled to introduce The Santa Claus Institute of Traditional Studies.

Our institute offers a comprehensive and evolving curriculum that goes beyond the basics outlined in the original booklet. While maintaining a deep respect for historical traditions, our courses are designed to enhance the experience of portraying Santa Claus, making it more enjoyable and memorable for children and families alike. From six original topics, we have expanded to twelve engaging and insightful courses, reflecting the growing depth and breadth of Santa Claus lore and practice.

Honoring the Heart of Santa Claus

In addition to our educational initiatives, the Santa Claus Research Committee
™ is dedicated to recognizing and honoring those who have made extraordinary contributions to the role of Santa Claus. For over a century, countless individuals—men and a few remarkable women—have embraced the red suit with a mission to spread joy and kindness. Many have gone above and beyond, embodying the true spirit of Christmas through selfless acts of generosity.

Our mission is to rediscover and celebrate these remarkable individuals, whose stories, whether widely recognized or quietly fading into history, have left a lasting impact on their communities. We seek to bring these stories to light, ensuring that their legacies of joy and goodwill are remembered and honored. Where appropriate, we pursue formal recognition and honors for these Santa Claus heroes from the towns, cities, and states they have touched with their Christmas spirit.
